Bridging Generations Through Sport: The First DAIS Volleyball Community Cup

Volleyball

Hello everyone! My name is Susan, the founder of Family Bridges. You may already know this organization from the previous online and offline workshops, the interview video, and multiple articles published on the DAIS website and WeChat official subscription account. However, I realized that parent-teen communication should not be limited to workshops and articles since those are very generic activities, and that is why I tried something different this time - hosting the first ever DAIS Volleyball Community Cup on September 26.

As a varsity volleyball player, communication seems to play a crucial role in every volleyball match. Indeed, without calling for the ball, it is very difficult to build the necessary cohesion within a team. This idea made me wonder: isn’t it a good idea to combine such a concept in volleyball with parent-teen communication? Therefore, this was the main reason as to why I chose such an innovative way of achieving the mission of Family Bridges.

Being the first one establishing such a competition also indicates uncertainties. For example, I was very nervous about the number of parents who would sign up because if we did not have enough players, then the games would not be as enjoyable as they supposed to be. With the support from the marketing department, the PE department, and both our varsity volleyball teams, a lot of parents and teachers actively signed up and participated in the match. Many students also came to support their friends on court. Ultimately, the atmosphere was extremely supportive, and I believe each player had a fantastic time! Moreover, it was such a valuable way to cement the bonds between parents and their children as well as the overall DAIS community spirit.

To me, I feel very grateful for all the supports to ensure the success of this event. Even though I experienced obstacles at the beginning, the results were satisfying. Thus, I will surely continue the community cup with the other sports in later seasons. We look forward to seeing you in the competitions!
