Building Foundations: Introducing SWLOs Through Action and Play

A student exploring School Wide Learner Outcomes in a playful way

Students at Dalian American International School kicked off the school year with energy, teamwork, and creativity. Through a series of hands-on activities, they were introduced to the School Wide Learning Outcomes (SWLOs), which guide how students grow in character, thinking, collaboration, and global understanding.

Each station was led by teachers and designed to be active, inclusive, and meaningful. Students moved in groups from one challenge to the next, learning through play, problem-solving, and reflection.

SWLO I – Character

Students responded to Care Bear-themed value cards such as Caring, Respect, Trustworthiness, and Fairness. Each card had a matching motion, and students had to act quickly when the card appeared. The game reinforced key character traits through movement and quick thinking.

SWLO II – Success Skills

Students faced three physical challenges. First, they flipped a bottle until it landed upright. Next, they jumped rope ten times in a row. Finally, they worked in teams to complete a Squid Game relay while balancing balls on spoons. Each task required patience, coordination, and resilience. Students reflected on how they kept going when things didn’t work the first time.

SWLO III – Higher Order Thinking

Students drew maps of the school campus from memory, including buildings, roads, and fences. After swapping maps with another group, they had to plan a route from one location to another without crossing through buildings or jumping fences. This task encouraged problem-solving, spatial awareness, and clear thinking.

SWLO IV – Intercultural Competence

In a silent charades-style game, students acted out prompts without speaking while others guessed the meaning. This activity helped students explore non-verbal communication and understand how people express ideas in different ways.

After completing all stations, students joined a group reflection led by teachers. They discussed what they learned and how each activity connected to the SWLOs. The event set a positive tone for the year, encouraging students to think, move, and grow together.
