Words That Inspire: Highlights from the 2025 DAIS/DHS Speech Contest

Speech contest winner

The annual DAIS/DHS Speech Contest was held this week. The participants ranged from students in Grade 8-12. The participants had the option of entering into three divisions: Original Oratory, Duo Interpretation, and Extemporaneous.

The Original Oratory had great speeches from Middle School and High School students on a variety of subjects. Grade 11 student, Julius C., invoked throught provoking insights about modern society's fixation on time. Zoe C., a Grade 9 student, provided a speech which focused on the nature of sibling rivalry — leaving the crowd smiling and laughing! The laughs didn't stop there, Leo M. in Grade 9 -- participating in his first ever speech contest — discussed the the need to have positive mentality while filling his speech with witty quips. Sabrina M. from Grade 8 presented a compelling case for the importance of happiness over money. And these are just to mention a few of the enthralling topics the students brought to the competition.

The Duo Interpretation elevated the cultural experience of the competition as Grade 11 students Hailey M. and Julius C. performed a scene from the Pride and Prejudice. The pacing and emotion of the scene left the crowd on a needle's edge, waiting for the dramatic conclusion of the scene.

The final category, Extemporaneous, had the participants on their toes. Each of the seven participants in the category were given a topic with only 20 minutes to prepare for their speech. Despite the temporal limitation, the DAIS/DHS speakers rose to the occasion. Grade 9 student Haoxuan X. presented a compelling case for the need to regulate social media and Grade 12 student Biel C. made the argument that sports should be part of a school's programming because of the intercultural opportunities it affords.

The annual Speech Contest was fun and lively, and we hope that we can hit the same high watermark next year!
