"What do I like about myself? - I provide humor in situations where it is needed."
"What do I like about others? - Their work ethics."
"What reminds you of who you are? - Looking back on how far I've come and developed as a person."
These are just a few of the affirmations written by our students and shared during the 2024 Winter Concert: 'Affirmations,' held on December 10. The event centered on the powerful theme of mental health and self-acceptance, inspiring reflection and unity through music and words. Through music, the concert aimed to spark meaningful conversations about mental well-being, encouraging the audience to embrace vulnerability and strength. Randall D. Standridge’s "Unbroken Project" pieces, "Fragile" and "Affirmation," were key performances of the evening, exploring the struggles of anxiety and depression, ultimately culminating in a message of self-love and validation.
The evening began with delightful pre-show entertainment featuring a euphonium duet, a saxophone quartet, and a string quintet, setting the tone for an unforgettable evening.
The main program began with the beginning orchestra performing "Allegro" by Shinichi Suzuki, the traditional tune "Boil Them Cabbage Down" arranged by Ruth Striegl, and Randall D. Standridge’s "Shiver," followed by the beginning band’s energetic renditions of Jodie Blackshaw’s "Whirlwind" and Standridge’s "The First Fallen Snow."
The intermediate band brought humor and depth with Brandon E. Robinson’s "March of the Sad Santas" and Randall D. Standridge’s "Fragile." The intermediate full orchestra delivered stirring performances of the traditional classic "Simple Gifts," arranged by Marsha Shapiro, and Ludwig van Beethoven’s "Ode to Joy," arranged by Richard Meyer.
The advanced full orchestra closed the concert with Frank Ticheli’s jubilant "Joy," Tyler S. Grant’s imaginative "In Your Wildest Dreams," Makkon’s atmospheric "Winterglade," and Randall D. Standridge’s dynamic "Imaginarium," culminating in a triumphant finale with his inspiring piece, "Affirmation."
Each ensemble contributed beautifully to an unforgettable night of music and meaningful celebration! Thank you to Ms. Ashley Mims and Ms. Lelia Lemay for their dedication and hard work in guiding the students and bringing this incredible concert to life.
You are beautiful.
You are JUST FINE the way you are.
And you are WORTH celebrating.
We all have more in common than we have different…our common humanity.
Peace, Love, and Music.
