Where Learning Grows: DAIS Expands Outdoor Opportunities for Young Learners

At Dalian American International School, learning doesn't stop at the classroom door.

This summer, a new student farm took shape on our campus, adding to the outdoor spaces where children can explore, discover, and learn through firsthand experiences. For our Early Years students, these spaces create daily opportunities to engage with nature while developing important skills through hands-on activities.

Whether planting seeds, watering vegetables, observing insects, or watching a garden change with the seasons, children learn by doing. These experiences encourage curiosity and help students understand the natural world in ways that books and screens simply cannot.

Outdoor learning also supports physical development. Digging in the soil, carrying watering cans, planting seedlings, and moving through outdoor environments help children strengthen both fine and gross motor skills. At the same time, they practice problem-solving, observation, and teamwork as they work alongside classmates and teachers.

Our location in Golden Pebble Beach resort area provides a unique setting for this kind of learning. Surrounded by natural beauty, students have regular opportunities to connect with the outdoors and experience learning in an environment that inspires exploration.

The new student farm reflects DAIS's commitment to creating meaningful learning experiences that engage the whole child. By bringing nature into everyday learning, we help students build confidence, independence, and a lasting appreciation for the world around them.

Families interested in learning more about our Early Years program will have an opportunity to experience outdoor learning firsthand at our upcoming Grow Through Nature event on Saturday, September 5. Children will plant, explore, practice English, and enjoy a morning of hands-on activities outdoors.
