Book Week, Sherlock Holmes Day, and More: Elementary Classroom Highlights

Sherlock Holmes Day

Spring is bringing fresh energy to our elementary classrooms. At Dalian American International School, students have been celebrating learning through many different activities and events. Let's take a look!

K & Grade 1 STEM Activity

In a hands on STEM challenge, our youngest learners designed their own mini golf courses using blocks and other materials. As they tested their designs, students predicted how the ball would move, adjusted slopes and obstacles, and experimented with cause and effect. The activity encouraged early engineering thinking, all while keeping learning playful.

Grade 3 Trap Design Challenge

Our third graders finished designing, building and testing their leprechaun traps! Students did a fantastic job, putting in so much effort, creativity, and teamwork to design and build their traps. It was wonderful to see their ideas come to life as they tested their designs and celebrated their hard work together. Safe to say, any leprechaun wandering into Grade 3 classroom would be well and truly caught!

Pi Day

Students celebrated Pi Day through engaging math activities that explored the concept of π (pi). Learners participated in hands-on challenges and problem-solving tasks to deepen their understanding of circles and mathematical thinking.

In Kindergarten, students celebrated Pi Day with scientist themed art and crafts. Grade 5 students took part in a pi memorization contest, with Harvey claiming first place by reciting an impressive 74 digits! Grade 2 created their own “pizza pie” diagrams, while Grade 3 explored the relationship between circumference and diameter by measuring circular objects with string. Grade 4 designed a city skyline inspired by the digits of pi. To make the celebration even sweeter, students also shared delicious pies.

Book Week

During Book Week, students celebrated a love of reading through a variety of engaging activities. These included D.E.A.R. (Drop Everything and Read) time, dressing up as their favorite characters, creating pocket poems, book fair, and listening to a guest reader, all of which helped foster excitement and appreciation for reading.

Grade 5 STEM Class

Students enjoyed their STEM class talking about chemical reactions and trying to fit as many “particles” as possible in a given space.

Sherlock Holmes Day

We celebrated Sherlock Holmes Day on April 17 by bringing mystery, logic, and sharp observation into classrooms, inspiring students to think like true detectives. Across Elementary, learners asked thoughtful questions, spotted clues, worked collaboratively, and many embraced the spirit of the day by dressing up as detectives.

Students participated in a range of engaging activities, from solving The Case of the Missing Magic Marker to tackling a space themed Language Arts escape room and enjoying mystery read alouds. These experiences encouraged critical thinking, creativity, and teamwork, making it a fun and memorable day of learning!
