Our Basketball season is under-way with large numbers turning out for practices. There has been significant growth in the girls team, and we have both a varsity and junior varsity team for the boys. In their first games of the season the girls played a brave game against Dalian National University and defeated Dalian Arts University 33-27, while the boys lost out in a very tight 1-point game to the Jinshi Blue men’s team in November.
Our Varsity boys team have participated in three games during the month of December. On December 2 they travelled to Oriental Cambridge International School in Shenyang. In what was a very tight game throughout our boys went down to an 85-77 defeat.
However, on December 6 the team bounced back with a vengeance in the “Jinshitan Derby” against Maple Leaf. In what was an exciting and tightly contested game, the Sea Dragons held their nerve to come through with 40-34 success. In their final game of the month, the boys lost to a very strong Minzhu University team - however even in defeat the boys can take so many positives from the game, and it has seemed to make them even hungrier to succeed in the ACAMIS tournament in the new year.
We have witnessed an outstanding turnout from our girls for practices and games. During December they have played 2 matches, with a narrow defeat against Dalian National University, followed up by another close game against Minzhu University. It is fantastic to see so many girls wishing to get involved in basketball and it bodes well for the future. We are very proud and indeed encouraged at the way in which they are developing ahead of the ACAMIS tournament in Xiamen.
An excellent addition to the sporting competition this year has been the emergence of a Junior Varsity program, who are also in the process of playing games and looking to develop their skills. They played their first game on December 2 against a visiting club and performed admirably. We anticipate that through continued hard work they will continue to improve and develop, allowing for the Sea Dragons to enjoy long-term success in basketball.
There are some exciting events coming up in January, with Changchun American International School and Oriental Cambridge International School, Shenyang paying us a visit to play basketball and volleyball on Friday 12 and Saturday 13 January. The following week sees our JV basketball team heading to Xi’an to take part in the Chang’An Cup, with January being rounded out with the season ending ACAMIS tournament in Xiamen.
