Book Week 2021 – Reading is for Everyone!

Students love reading

During the third week of March, DAIS celebrated Book Week. Students, teachers, and administrators could participate in a wide arrange of activities and events with the same goal: celebrate books and reading.

Elementary School Events

DAIS Elementary School had an exciting and successful Book Week celebrating books, reading, and all things literacy. Students and staff had fun participating in different literacy activities throughout the week encouraging children to read and to talk about books. Some of the activities throughout Book Week included guest readers; book raffles; a door decorating contest; and dress up days culminating in a school-wide character dress up day.

Dress up days in elementary school

Thirty-five elementary students won books through the raffle drawings. Ms. Kelly’s Grade 1 homeroom class won the door decoration contest, and each student was awarded with a book. Another highlight of the week was our annual Book Fair. Blue Fountain brought a large selection of books, games, and puzzles for our community to purchase. The Elementary Library was also awarded twenty new books.

Secondary School Activities

Several activities were organized during the Book Week at DAIS Secondary School. Blue Fountain, a vendor specialized in educational materials and books, organized a book fair at our school. Students, teachers, and parents could visit the fair and browse and buy a wide range of books in English and Chinese. Middle School Student could visit the fair with their English classes, and HS students could go in their own free time.

Decorated doors in secondary

Advisories were working hard to decorate their classroom doors with a book and/or a character theme. The winner of the Door Decorating contest is Ms. Sonsie Ang’s Advisory – DAIS Grade 8. The students also had the opportunity to interchange used books for other ones and discover new titles. The Book Swap was held in front of the Secondary Library and quickly became a hot spot for our community.

Competitions Around the School

A school-wide Bookmark Contest was held throughout the week challenging students to design a bookmark around the "Reading is for Everyone!" theme using original artwork. Elementary School had more than fifty entries from students of all ages. Our bookmark competition winners are Laamu Wang, Grade 2; Samantha Villanueva, Grade 5; Yingxi Han, Grade 7; and Daniel Park, Grade 11. These designs are being professionally printed, and the bookmarks will be available in the DAIS libraries in May. Several more contests were promoted during that week. All students had the chance to read and celebrate reading and win prizes. In "Get Caught Reading!" teachers were giving some raffle tickets to students who were caught reading during that week. Here is the list of "Get Caught Reading!" winners, they got some special prizes from Ms. Perez:

Jesper Bertelsen – Grade 6 Danny Wu – Grade 7
Amanda Jiang – Grade 7 Eva Yang – Grade 7
Matthew Li – Grade 9 Megan Tian – Grade 9
Calvin Zhuang – Grade 11 Viki Liwen Zhang – Grade 11

Another exciting event was "Guess the Reader!" where Students had the chance to guess which books their teachers were reading. The winner of this contest was Richmon Nievera, DAIS Grade 7.

It was a fantastic and thrilling week where our community had an amazing opportunity to celebrate books and literature. We encourage parents to share books with their children throughout the whole year. Share books to not only learn about the world, but also to spark a love of literature and to enjoy family time together.
