After a prolonged intermission caused by the pandemic, on November 12th DAIS Performing Arts Department hosted the first public concert in the fall of 2020 – the Music Vernissage. The French word ‘vernissage’ means the first day of the art exhibition. You may ask yourself, what does ART have to do with MUSIC? We can tell you that the two are closely related! When we’re listening to music, our mind is drawing pictures and images inspired by the melodies. Music is what we hear, what we see, what we taste, and what we feel. And we can even imagine the colors of the music: from warm pastels to bright and explosive tints.
The concert at DAIS featured a mixed classical and modern repertoire. The Middle School and High School bands and small vocal and instrumental groups received a huge ovation. Students demonstrated diversity of cultural expression and the potential of creativity in solo and ensemble performances – from the world famous masterpieces to their own arrangements and compositions. The participants performed Ravel’s Bolero, Oblivion by Astor Piazzolla, Shostakovich’s Waltz No. 2, Aladdin (Medley), a Beethoven’s Overture and many more. Vocal pieces presented all kinds of music genres and styles like ballade, pop, rap, hip-hop, and Chinese contemporary music. We were truly proud to celebrate our students’ talents and passion for music.
