On the evening of December 3, the Multipurpose room was transformed with twinkly white lights and the room was filled with beautifully diverse holiday selections all on the theme of “Light.” The middle school and high school choirs dazzled the audience, each piece of music bringing it’s own version of light, warmth, hope and joy. After such a long and dark year dealing with COVID-19 and distance learning, and the heartbreak of having no possibility of a spring concert, this evening of music was certainly a celebration.
The middle school choirs performed five pieces, including a processional where students surrounded the audience with their beautiful voices. Two student accompanists were featured: 10th grader Sharon Sun, and 8th grader Jin Gang Lin. Some of the pieces included choreography, and one vocal solo was performed beautifully by Serena Liu.
The high school choirs surprised and delighted the audience with a girls’ only piece which featured student accompanist Tiger Ma. The young ladies from both choirs combined together to sing a song called “She Sings” which depicts a young girl who loves to sing. And the boys nearly stole the show with their bold and brave rendition of a Nigerian Christmas Song “Betelehemu.” The men performed with exciting choreography and a percussion ensemble featuring three choir members on African drums. Three awesome tenor soloists (Iverson Wang, Charlie Liu, and Goldberg Li) shared their jubilant voices.
The two high school choirs each performed two pieces alone, and two more pieces combined. Another special touch was having students from the choirs come to the microphones to introduce each piece of music. Sharon Sun was at the piano again, and two other talented 8th graders (Jessica Zhou and Suah Lee) also accompanied on cello and violin. It was certainly a memorable evening filled with light, hope, warmth, and song.
