From DAIS to the Stars: Ukon's Journey to Physics and Astronomy

When DAIS Class of 2026 graduate Ukon looks at the night sky, he sees questions waiting to be answered. 

At DAIS, that curiosity became a passion for physics and astronomy—and a pathway to the Australian National University, where he’ll begin his next chapter. 

Here’s Ukon’s story, in his own words. 

Transitioning to DAIS

I have lived in China for about 12 years, and personally, Dalian American International School shaped my future and my academics in many ways. 

Before moving to DAIS, I learned only basic English vocabulary and grammar. When I entered 8th grade, my family decided it was time for me to transfer to DAIS. 

My first year at DAIS was challenging due to my English skills and the sudden change in environment. With support from my teachers and many hours spent reading books from the library, I gradually became more confident and successful in my studies. 

In Grade 10, I began pushing myself further by taking my first AP courses: AP Chinese and AP Human Geography. At first, all the new vocabulary and concepts felt overwhelming, but that experience helped me succeed in junior and senior years. 

Starting to Choose Courses for My Future

In Grade 11 and 12, I gained more agency in choosing my courses. My personal interests lie in astronomy and economics. I'm especially interested in astronomy because it combines wonder, science, and endless questions.

I took AP Physics 1 and 2, AP Precalculus and Calculus AB, AP Microeconomics and Macroeconomics, as well as AP English Language and Composition. These courses strengthened my understanding of physics and economics, while AP Lang taught me how to write sophisticated essays. 

Learning Beyond the Classroom

Beyond AP classes, I participated in Model United Nations for two years and Studio Support and Leadership for a year. MUN helped me develop my public speaking, leadership skills, and understanding of real-world issues. Studio Support and Leadership further strengthened my sense of responsibility and helped prepare me for young adulthood.

Navigating the University Application Process

I applied to several universities in Australia, including the University of Melbourne, the Australian National University, Monash University, and the University of Sydney. My top choice was ANU because of its own astronomy observatory and highly ranked physics program. 

The application process was similar at all the universities I applied to, with applications submitted through their websites and admissions decisions based primarily on grades. I also learned that in Australia, some scholarships are only available to domestic students or citizens of specific countries, so if financial aid is important to you, be sure to check the requirements carefully.

In Canada, I applied to the University of British Columbia, York University, McMaster University, and the University of Windsor. UBC required a personal profile, so extracurricular activities played an important role in building a strong application. The other universities only required transcripts and proof of graduation.

Choosing the Right University

After receiving a few offers, I decided to go to the Australian National University. This was primarily because of the strong physics and astronomy major that the school offers. I was also drawn to the fact that the university has its own large telescope.

When choosing a university, don’t focus on rankings only. Instead, consider the facilities, resources, and overall quality of life around the university.

I cannot wait to use a huge telescope and explore the unknowns in outer space!
