Inspired by Science, Shaped by Basketball: Meet Anna Zhao, Class of 2026

She once struggled in Biology class and lacked confidence in her English skills. Today, Anna Zhao is heading to the University of Washington in Seattle to study Pre-Science/Kinesiology. In this interview, our Class of 2026 graduate reflects on how the teachers at Dalian American International School empower students to achieve more than they ever imagined possible. 

Finding Confidence in the Classroom

Hi, I’m Anna Zhao from the DAIS/DHS class of 2026. You may recognize me from various service events or the basketball season. 

My journey at DAIS/Huamei began in Grade 8 when I transferred from a public middle school. At the very beginning, every day felt like “survival.” I felt nervous talking to teachers and doing assignments, especially presentations.

However, things started to change in Biology. I began to develop a genuine interest in science throughout the lessons and a motivation to improve my English skills. I still remember that my grade from the 1st to the 2nd semester of biology boosted from C to A-, which was a significant milestone for me at that time. I’m grateful not only for my teacher's instruction, but also for his patience and for never giving up on me.

Learning Beyond the Classroom

From that moment, I became more willing to challenge myself and to take new opportunities. 

From Grade 9 to 11, I’ve done a lot of service-based activities, aiming to help our community and people from other backgrounds. For instance, seeing the educational gap between regions, I was inspired to join a rural area teaching program for 10 weeks. I taught students and got to know them better, and I saw how different their learning environment was, this helped me realize how important education really is.

The Sea Dragon Ambassador organization in our school provided a great platform for me to extend my interest in service. Each quarter, we did a service-based activity focusing on different community groups like the elderly or orphans. This organization inspired me to come up with creative ideas and taught me the process of organizing an event.

The Invitation That Changed Everything

In addition, one of the biggest changes I experienced during my five years at DAIS/DHS was becoming involved in sports, something I never imagined myself enjoying.

The turning point was when Mr. Singleton asked me whether I wanted to join the varsity basketball team. This unique opportunity made me more willing to participate in sports and try new activities. 

Through basketball, I discovered that sports are not only about competition, but also about having fun, staying active, and spending time with friends. This experience was the most precious part of my whole high school life and also helped me decide my future college major.

Turning Passion into Purpose

The reason why I chose biology/kinesiology as my college major is a combination of family influence and my experience in varsity sports. Growing up, I was surrounded by family members working in science and healthcare, which sparked my interest in science and the human body from an early age. 

At the same time, my experience on the varsity team allowed me to appreciate the importance of physical health, movement, and athletic performance. I want to extend my passion in the future and help others live healthier lives.

More Than University Destination

Looking back on my five years at DAIS/DHS, I realize that this school has given me much more than academic knowledge. It has provided me with opportunities to discover my interests, challenge myself, and grow into a more confident and open-minded person.

My advice to students preparing for the college application process is to start planning early and stay organized. Try to take those standardized tests as early as possible to avoid unnecessary stress and anxiety during your senior year. This will give you more time to construct your personal statement and supplementary essay. 

Also, just take as many opportunities as possible; don’t hesitate because you're unsure whether you'll succeed or not. Sometimes the experiences that seem to be the most challenging or unexpected can become the most valuable and meaningful part of your journey.

Moving Forward

Looking back on my five years at DAIS/DHS, I am incredibly grateful for everyone who has supported me along the way. The memories I've made, the lessons I've learned, and the people I have met will always hold a special place in my heart.  I will carry these memories with me as I continue my journey and explore what lies ahead.
