Expanding High School Program with A Levels

High school student

For the last 20 years, Dalian American International School has built a leading Advanced Placement program in Northeast China. Consistently high results, subject breadth, and strong university recognition have made AP a defining strength of our high school. With AP remaining at the core of our curriculum, in the next academic year we will add Cambridge International A Levels to expand choice for students.

A levels will be added as subjects within the existing High School Diploma. This will give students more choices, both of subjects themselves and of the structure of their learning. A levels are taught over two years, whereas AP is taught in one. It is anticipated that the majority of students will continue to focus on the existing AP subjects offered, but there are a small number who have expressed interest in the A level subjects and approach.

How many subjects will we offer?

At launch, we will offer the following A Level subjects: Mathematics and/or Mathematics - Further, Physics, Economics, Business, and Chinese. These subjects can be combined flexibly to meet common university entry requirements across the UK, Hong Kong, Asia, and the USA. Subject selection is based on student interest, teacher expertise, and alignment with these university pathways. Students will also have access to EAL (English as an Additional Language) support within the program.

Mathematics

The course develops essential transferable skills that students can apply across a wide range of subjects. They learn to think logically and independently, focus on accuracy, use mathematics to model real situations, analyze outcomes, and reflect on their learning. These skills prepare students well for higher education and future careers.

Mathematics – Further

The course is designed for high‑achieving students seeking deeper engagement with advanced mathematical concepts. It strengthens essential skills such as logical thinking, problem solving, accurate analysis, and the ability to model real situations using mathematics, skills that are highly valued by universities.

Physics

The course focuses on core theoretical principles, current applications, and advanced practical skills assessed through a scheduled practical exam. It emphasizes conceptual understanding, application in new contexts, problem‑solving, and creative thinking, and supports students planning to study physics or related fields at university.

Economics

The course develops students’ ability to explain and analyze economic issues, evaluate information, and communicate ideas clearly. It covers key concepts such as the price system, international trade and exchange rates, employment and inflation, the theory of the firm, macroeconomic policy, and economic growth and development.

Business

The course builds students’ understanding of how businesses operate and the role they play in society. It examines decision‑making in dynamic business environments and covers key areas including business and its environment, human resource management, marketing, operations management, finance and accounting, and the development of business strategy.

Chinese

The course develops Chinese language proficiency from independent to proficient user level while strengthening communication skills and intercultural awareness. Student build vocabulary and grammar through themed study and engage with the language, culture, society, and literature of Chinese‑speaking communities.

In addition to A Level subjects, the school also offers more than 70 American high school courses and over 23 AP courses for students to choose from, providing a more flexible way for university admission.

High School Diploma

Students, whether studying APs, A Levels, or the other subjects which we offer, will earn a U.S. High School Diploma, a credential widely recognized across the world. Our curriculum aligns closely with international university admission standards, making academic records easy for admissions officers to review without score conversion.

The diploma also offers great flexibility for overseas university transfers, as the American curriculum structure closely matches university-level expectations, helping institutions better understand students’ academic preparation.
