Grade 12 Students Bring History to Life Through Debate

debate

This week in Mr. Waldvogel’s Grade 12 U.S. History classes, students stepped into the shoes of historical figures to debate one of the most defining questions of the 18th century: Should the American colonies go to war with Britain?

In two lively and well-structured debate sessions, students represented multiple perspectives — from passionate Patriots to loyal Loyalists and pragmatic Neutral observers. They demonstrated strong historical understanding by presenting clear points of view (NCHS2.2), contextualizing arguments with related events (NCHS2.4), and acknowledging multiple perspectives (NCHS3.2).

Adding to the spirit of the event, Mr. Waldvogel himself joined the action in costume as a Patriot general — only missing the wig! His enthusiasm helped set the tone for an immersive and memorable experience.

The energy in the classroom was intense. Students were highly engaged, delivering persuasive arguments, rebutting opposing claims, and drawing on their knowledge of key events leading up to the American Revolution. Beyond mastering content, they honed essential communication and critical-thinking skills impressively!

Students not only deepening their historical understanding but also had fun while doing it. A huge congratulations to all of our debaters for their enthusiasm, preparation, and thoughtful arguments.
