The Dalian American International School Model United Nations Fall Conference 2021 (DAISMUN Fall Conference 2021) was held successfully on October 16, 2021. There were more than 130 delegates, chairs, and admins who attended the event. In accordance with the latest COVID-19 protocols, only DAIS students could attend this fall conference.
The conference not only gave our new MUNers a chance to experience MUN and provided an additional chance for returning MUNers to practice their Model United Nations skills, but also let DAIS middle school students participate in formal debates for the first time in DAIS history.
In the opening ceremony, the DAISMUN Director Mr. Bryan Mcloughlin and Secretary-General Jasmine Zhao emphasized the importance of this conference, as well as gave their words of encouragement to all the new and returning MUNers alike.
This fall we were honored to host five committees, including General Assembly 1, General Assembly 2, the Economic and Social Council, the Security Council, and the Human Rights Council. The theme of this year’s conference was “The Recovery of Humanity,” with the goal of promoting revitalization and growth in the aftermath of the global crisis that occurred in 2020 and 2021.
The MUN Secretariat has always tried to provide practical options for every student. Previously, only high school students who took the MUN applied studies class were allowed to attend the MUN conferences. However, this year the Secretariat decided to allow middle schoolers join the conference too. To better aid the middle school students in preparing for the event, the secretariat started after-school activity classes (ASAs) to allow them build and practice their MUN abilities and learn the same content as the high school students. This initiative gave the MS students the honor and the opportunity to participate in the conference as delegates.
To provide middle school students with a better experience, they were paired with proficient high school MUN students who addressed their questions one-on-one and assisted them during their first conference.
One of our students was in quarantine and couldn’t join the conference in person. We assigned an admin member to connect with the delegate online and pass his ideas and statements to the committee.
During the closing ceremony Ms. Rowena Liu, the DAISMUN supervisor, congratulated the new MUN students who bravely stood on the podium for the first time as well as returning MUNers taking another step towards being a more advanced participant.
Rita Yao, the Deputy General-Secretary of DAISMUN, expressed the hope that all delegates took the fall conference as an opportunity to better prepare themselves for DAISMUN XII next March.
