Harmony with Nature: Earth Day at DAIS

Mountain hike for elementary students

The Earth Day is an annual global event organized on April 22 to demonstrate support for environmental protection. Since 1970, there has been held a wide range of events, now involving 1 billion people in more than 193 countries all over the world. Dalian American International School also takes part in this initiative, and this year we held the extended Earth Week from April 19th through April 23rd to support the movement.

Our students participated in a lot of fun, engaging, and meaningful activities, including presentations and quizzes, games and movies, hiking, chalk murals, and the magnificent Trashion Show in the New Gym.

Celebration in the Elementary School

Elementary School kids did a lot of things to celebrate the Earth Week: played thematic games in their classrooms, created puppets out of recycled materials, watched the Lorax movie, wrote scripts and poems, sang with Mr. Reyna and Dr. G, drew murals with Mr. Martin, and decorated the garden in front of the Elementary building.

Despite the overcast weather on Thursday, April 22, Elementary School kids were able to go on a hike with their teachers to the nearest mountain. It was a perfect way to learn about local plants and birds, as well as do some exercise.

Kids also had a lot of fun playing sports games with Mrs. Knoblock and Ms. Halpenny. The teachers prepared a special event for them – the recyclables sorting competition. Students were divided into several groups and took turns in running around the gym and putting recyclables into different containers.

Mural with fish

Mr. Martin, the Elementary School Arts teacher, offered our students to draw some nature-themed chalk murals in the hallways. And soon our blue floors turned into ocean full of fish and sea animals!

Secondary School Activities

In DAIS Secondary School, Mr. Malik and the Environmental Studies class traditionally organizes events and celebrations on Earth Day to raise awareness about environmental crisis and mobilize people to act.

During Earth Day 2021, students made online presentations and quizzes about microplastics, biodiversity, and recycling. The information session combined with hands-on activities: making fashion items out of trash, creating musical instruments from waste materials, and making unique planters for a better environment. DAIS students aim to use recycled materials only for all activities and to highlight the problem of waste produced in our own community.

Outfits made of garbage

The Earth Week at DAIS culminated in a celebration assembly and the unique Trashion Show in the New Gym on Thursday, April 22. The showcase started with 8th and 10th Grade bands performing foot tapping music using instruments made from trash. Then students held a very special fashion show where they presented outfits made of all sorts of garbage. Discarded posters, cans, cartons, old newspapers, plastic – everything could be used to create head-turning designs. This activity reminded us how important it is to protect the environment and to reuse the waste.
