Last Friday and Saturday, March 5th and 6th, Dalian American International School was proud to host the DAISMUN XI conference. Five committees worked together in the DAIS secondary building led by Mr. McLoughlin and Ms. Liu.
Because of the epidemic situation, only local schools could participate in the event, namely Dalian Maple Leaf International School and Maple Leaf Foreign Nationals School. 130 students from different schools have been debating over two days, addressing current events, discussing international situation, and utilizing critical thinking to resolve ongoing international issues. Of of the topics that stirred up a heated debate was protection of refugees. The students have gained a lot from this discussion, showing their deep understanding and true compassion.
This year, five commissions were organized: United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), Security Council (SC), World Health Organization (WHO), General Assembly (GA), and Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC). The necessary arrangements were made under the supervision of Mr. McLoughlin. Students in the leadership team worked hard to prepare for the event. There also were 30 students who volunteered to support the organizers at each venue, making sure that debates run smoothly and participants are taken care of.
At the closing ceremony, Deputy Secretary-General Jasmine Zhao summed up the two days of heated discussions and speeches at all venues. After a short recap for each conference, the committee presidents awarded the Best Delegate and Outstanding Delegate for each section.
Congratulations to the winners:
Committee | Best Delegate | Outstanding Delegate |
---|---|---|
General Assembly | Hanjun Cho | Haoran Luo |
ECOSOC | Zuri Qu (FNS) | Joey Liu (MLIS) |
UNHCR | Danny Liu | Charmain Xu |

Security Council | Russel Chan | Jazper Lu |
One of the participants shared his experience: "DAISMUN XI is one of the best DAISMUN conferences I've attended, and it's also my first time fully attending a conference as a member of the leadership team. Following the cancellation of DAISMUN last year, this year's success was a great encouragement for all of us. Although we didn't get a chance to invite MUNers from outside the city, the great diversity of participants this year still made the conference a fruitful event and gave me lots of inspiration. I want to thank all teachers, students, and staff members who supported the secretariat team to run this conference smoothly as well as MLIS and MLFNS for joining us. Looking forward to next year's conference!"
This DAISMUN session was really a big success, and we would like to thank all organizers and participants.
