10th Annual Speech Contest

On Tuesday the 24th, students in the secondary school had the chance to compete in the 10th Annual DAIS/DHA Speech Contest organized by Kevin Stofocik, our English Language Arts and Social Studies teacher. Students from any grade level - 7th to 12th - were welcome to share their voice. There were two categories in which the students could participate. The first was Oratory. For this category, the students selected one topic from four provided and wrote a minimum of three-minutes speech to present. They had to prepare their speaking points as well as have organized and lucid ideas for their response.

These are topics that students were able to choose from:

• Do students benefit from required physical education classes in high school?
• Should learning multiple languages be required in school?
• Should parents be allowed complete access to their child's cellphone?
• Should university-bound students be required to take a gap year before continuing their studies?

The second category was Impromptu. In this category, students had a total of six minutes to prepare and present a speech on a randomly selected topic. All student competitors did very well; especially for it being many students first time speaking competitively and in public! Additionally, a thank you goes out to Joel Sparks and Amanda Stark who judged the contest, Terry Horn for running the Impromptu room, Robert Rojas for assisting with score-keeping, and Kevin for taking pictures.
