On 23 October the DAIS boys and girls ACAMIS volleyball teams departed to attend the 2019-20 Gold Division ACAMIS tournament in Shenzhen. ISNS (International School of Nanshan Shenzhen) hosted teams from five different schools including DAIS. These teams trained all season to be able to showcase not only their athletic skills, but also their character in relationship building and sportsmanship. The players were accompanied by their coaches, Matt Krakowski, Taylor Hayman, Ashley Hopper, and Robert Rojas.
After a good rest at the hotel on the night of arrival the players woke up and were ready to take on the competition. The first day both the boys and girls walked away with one win and one loss. The second day was a bit more challenging; the girls were disappointed with three losses while the boys won one of their three games. On the third and final day of the competition playoffs began, both DAIS boys’ and girls’ teams competed in their final game for 5th place. Boys and girls both won the game against SWIS (Shen Wai International School) and finished in 5th place.
Our athletes happily cheered on other teams throughout the weekend and forged new friendships with students from various schools, which was an ultimate win. On the last night, the host school held a banquet with food and awards. Emily Liu and Eddie Qian received the MVP award for their team because of their strong leadership skills and positive attitudes they carried with them throughout the entire weekend. On Sunday morning our DAIS athletes left with smiling faces and memorable experiences that will stay with them for a lifetime. Although some great athletes will graduate this year, our younger players are excited and ready to take on the tournament again next year.
