Biography

Joel Sparks’s teaching and learning adventure has been an exciting one, taking him around the world and back again. Joel joined DAIS in the spring of 2018, coming to Dalian from the historic and beautiful city of Istanbul, where he taught for three years in a bilingual international school for Turkish citizens. Joel originally earned his honours and master’s degrees in English literature from the universities of Saskatchewan and Ottawa in Canada before setting off on his first classroom teaching position in the South Korean public school system, where he taught for three years.

Following that life-changing experience, he returned to Canada to earn his Bachelor of Education at Nipissing University before setting back out for Istanbul. Joel believes in active, learner-centered classrooms that emphasize student responsibility and participation in a larger, though ever shrinking, world. He asks his students to engage with real world topics, apply critical thinking skills, and to be brave in presenting and sharing their work.
