Extracurricular activities are an important part of the educational experience of our students. Research shows that children who participate in these activities are more successful academically than those who do not. Participation in our program gives students the chance to excel in ways which can make a huge difference in self-esteem. Many extracurricular activities teach real-world skills which can lead to lifelong interests and even careers. All this happens in a relaxed setting which can serve to boost student achievement.
At Dalian American International School we offer after school activities as part of the extracurricular activities program. After School Activities take place at the end of the academic day. The activities begin at 3:45 PM and end at 4:30 PM. Parents wanting their child(ren) to participate in the DAIS After School Activities Program will need to collect their child(ren) and provide transportation home after the activity. Students may opt for more than one activity. There are three sessions of extracurricular activities; this year’s sessions dates are: September 13 to November 5, November 29 to February 18 and March 21 to May 20.
The Athletic Program is another component of our extracurricular agenda. This year’s seasons are as follow: Volleyball: August 30 through October 29 Basketball: November 1 through January 28 Soccer: February 14 through May 31 Practices are normally scheduled for Tuesdays through Fridays from 3:45PM to 5:15 PM, not more than three training sessions a week. However, coaches may arrange other practice times with their respective teams. Parents wanting their child(ren) to participate in the Athletic Program will need to collect their child(ren) and provide transportation home after the activity. Participants are expected to attend all games and practices. Each season will culminate with the participation in the ACAMIS (Association of China and Mongolia International School) tournaments: Volleyball (10/21/10- 10/23/10, Shanghai), Basketball (01/23/11-01/25/11, Beijing) and Soccer (04/14/11-04/17/11, Ningbo). DAIS will participate with both girls and boys teams, for all tournaments. The general philosophy for DAIS athletics is to encourage all interested students to participate. Therefore, we encourage a no-cut policy. However, due to our involvement with and membership in the ACAMIS, we must adhere to the following tournament squad sizes: -Volleyball (6-a-side, squad size 7-10) - Basketball (5-a-side, squad size 6-10) - Soccer (7-a-side, squad size 8-12) Choosing the members of the tournament squads is the sole responsibility of the coaches of those teams. Students who will not be selected for the tournament will have the opportunity to play with local teams in exhibition matches.
The sponsors of these activities are the dedicated teachers, parents and members of our community. At DAIS we believe in offering a meaningful and diverse extracurricular program by accessing the knowledge and talents of the entire community. Having this in mind, we welcome parents and members of the community to join our program in offering our students a variety of activities.

General Guidelines:
1. Students’ participation in extracurricular activities is optional, but it becomes compulsory after the student sign up for it. 2. Students are allowed to sign up for more then one After School Activity. 3. Sign up sheets deadlines are strictly adhered to, due to logistics considerations. 4. Forms must be turned in to the homeroom teacher for Elementary students and to advisory teachers for Secondary. 5. If an After School Activity is limited to a certain number of students, the number of slots available is equally divided by the number of grades joining the activity. In some cases a lottery may be necessary to determine participants.
