|Cindy Pacholik – Pre-K-12 English as an Additional Language Curriculum Specialist
Cindy comes from the Canadian prairies and has been part of the DAIS community since 2017. She is delighted to return this year in the exciting new role of EAL curriculum specialist. Cindy holds a Bachelor of Education degree from the University of Saskatchewan, a Certificate in English Language Teaching from Cambridge University and is currently pursuing graduate coursework specializing in TESOL. Her professional experience includes teaching at elementary, secondary, and post-secondary levels in Egypt, Canada, and China as well as EAL program design and curriculum development. Cindy is committed to engaging in positive relationships with students, families, and colleagues which she believes are all essential for student success. She enjoys exploring the world as a traveler, a reader, a writer, and a learner who is perpetually inspired by those she meets along the way.
Ana Baltatescu joined DAIS in August 2016 from Xiamen, China, where she lived for six years. Ms. Baltatescu holds a Bachelor of Arts Degree in English and French Language and Literature and a Master Degree in International Education from Framingham State University. Ana Baltatescu started her teaching career as a High School English and French teacher in her home country, Romania. Her international experience includes working at schools from China and the U.S. where she taught ESL, MYP Language Acquisition and Model United Nations (MUN). Ms. Baltatescu seeks to inspire her students through her passion for foreign languages and literature.
Mr. Bryant graduated from the University of Southern California in 2014 with a degree in international relations with an emphasis in Pacific Rim studies. Growing up, Mr. Bryant was an actor auditioning for major television network series and films. In college, he began studying Chinese language and culture, seeking a slightly different career path. In 2014, Mr. Bryant moved to Shanghai, China and studied Chinese language at Fudan University. Mr. Bryant has been with DAIS/Huamei for two and a half years and is looking forward to teaching drama and EAL this year. In his free time, Mr. Bryant likes playing with his dog, making Chinese food with his wife, playing video games, watching films, and writing for his blog.
Mary Porter joined the DAIS Family in 2016 as the Middle School English Language Learning Specialist. She hails from Houston, Texas by way of Gloster, Mississippi. Mary has 18 years of teaching experience in Elementary grades 1st, 2nd, and 3rd, including experience as an Instructional Coordinator and an ESL Coach. She earned a Bachelor Degree in Elementary Education from Southern University in Louisiana and a Master Degree from the University of Houston-Victoria in Texas in Administration and Supervision. Mary’s Educational Philosophy is that every child can learn when given the skills and opportunity and teaching the whole child promotes life-long learning. She looks forward to continuing her journey in China and all that it has to offer.
Meik Loughran joined the DAIS community in 2013 to pursue a long-held ambition of becoming a language teacher. Born and raised in Colorado, he studied foreign language education at the Pädagogische Hochschule in Karlsruhe, Germany before graduating from the University of Northern Colorado in 2010 with a bachelor’s in German and philosophy. In 2016 he earned a master’s degree in EAL international education, curriculum and instruction preK-12 from George Mason University in Fairfax, Virginia, and completed a teaching internship here at DAIS. After graduating he was hired to teach secondary EAL full time. He believes that even beginning-level English language learners can work at all levels of higher-order thinking and that reading and writing proficiency is dependent upon the development of rich oral academic language.
Paula Nicolini graduated with a bachelor’s degree in linguistics from the University of California, Irvine and a master’s degree in educational psychology from the University of California, Riverside. She did additional course work at Sam Houston State University to earn her administrator certification. Ms. Nicolini is certified in both California and Texas. She has taught all grades including bilingual preK – college level EAL. Most recently, she served in Conroe, TX as the principal of Hauke High School. Ms. Nicolini wanted to be back in the classroom doing what she loves best, which is helping second language learners excel. With this in mind, she joined DAIS and the Huamei Academy for her first year of teaching abroad. She is dedicated to helping our EAL students both in her classroom and by collaborating with the core subject teachers. She is here to support the students!
